The Song of Mahamudra

Mahamudra is beyond all words and symbols,
But for you, Naropa, earnest and loyal, must this be said.

The Void needs no reliance; Mahamudra rests on naught.
Without making an effort, but remaining natural,
One can break the yoke thus gaining liberation.

If one looks for naught when staring into space;
If with the mind one then observes the mind;
One destroys distinctions and reaches Buddhahood.

The clouds that wander through the sky have no roots, no home,
Nor do the distinctive thoughts floating through the mind.
Once the Self-mind is seen, Discrimination stops.

In space, shapes and colors form
But neither by black nor white is space tinged.
From the Self-mind all things emerge;
The Mind by virtues and by vices is not stained.

The darkness of ages cannot shroud the glowing sun;
The long eons of Samsara ne’er can hide the Mind’s brilliant light.

Though words are spoken to explain the Void, the Void as such can
never be expressed. Though we say “the Mind is a bright light,
” it is beyond all words and symbols. Although the Mind is void
in essence, all things it embraces and contains.

Do naught with the body but relax;
Shut firm the mouth and silent remain;
Empty your mind and think of naught.
Like a hollow bamboo rest at ease your body.
Giving not nor taking, put your mind at rest.
Mahamudra is like a mind that clings to naught.
Thus practicing, in time you will reach Buddhahood.

The practice of Mantra and Perfections, instructions in the Sutras and
Precepts, and teaching from the Schools and Scriptures will not bring
realization of the Innate Truth. For if the mind when filled with some
desire should seek a goal, it only hides the Light.

One who keeps the Tantric Precepts yet discriminates, betrays the
vows of Awakening,

Cease all activity; abandon all desire; let thoughts rise and fall as they
will like the ocean waves.

One who never harms the Non-abiding nor the Principles of non-distinction,
upholds the Tantric Precepts.

He who abandons craving and clings not to this or that,
Perceives the real meaning given in the Scriptures.

In Mahamudra all one’s sins are burned; in Mahamudra one is released from
the prison of this world. This is the Dharma’s supreme torch. Those who
disbelieve it are fools who ever wallow in misery and sorrow.

To strive for liberation one should rely on a Guru. When your mind receives
the Guru’s blessing emancipation is at hand.

Alas, all things in this world are meaningless; they are but sorrow’s seeds.
Small teachings lead to acts. One should only follow teachings that are great.

To transcend duality is the Kingly View; to conquer distractions is the
Royal Practice; the Path of No-practice is the Way of the Buddhas. 0ne who
treads that Path reaches Buddhahood.

Transient is this world; like phantoms and dreams,
Substance it has none. Grasp not the world nor your kin;
Cut the strings of lust and hatred; meditate in woods and mountains.
If without effort you remain loosely in the “natural state,”
soon Mahamudra you will win and attain the Non-attainment.

Cut the root of the tree and the leaves will wither;
cut the root of your mind and Samsara falls.

The light of any lamp dispels in a moment the darkness of long eons;
The strong light of the mind in but a flash will burn the veil of ignorance.

Whoever clings to mind sees not the truth of what’s beyond the mind.
Whoever strives to practice Dharma finds not the truth of Beyond-practice.
One should cut cleanly through the root of the mind and stare naked.
One should thus break away from all distinctions and remain at ease.

One should not give and take but remain natural, for Mahamudra is beyond
all acceptance and rejection.

Since the consciousness is not born, no one can obstruct it or soil it;
Staying in the “Unborn” realm all appearances will dissolve into the
ultimate Dharma.

All self-will and pride will vanish into naught.
The supreme Understanding transcends all this and that.
The supreme Action embraces great resourcefulness without attachment.
The supreme Accomplishment is to realize immanence without hope.

At first a yogi feels his mind is tumbling like a waterfall;
In mid-course, like the Ganges, it flows on slow and gentle;
In the end, it is a great vast ocean,
Where the lights of Child and Mother merge in one.

Tilopa: El Canto del Mahamudra

Mahamudra trasciende las palabras y símbolos,
pero para ti, Naropa, he decir esto:
“El vacío no necesita apoyo;
Mahamudra descansa en la nada.
Sin hacer ningún esfuerzo;
permaneciendo relajado y natural
puede uno romper el yugo
y obtener de esta manera la Liberación.

Si ves el vacío cuando contemplas el espacio;
si con la mente observas la mente,
destruyes las distinciones
y alcanzas el estado de Buda.

Las nubes que vagan por el cielo no tienen raíces, ni hogar,
ni tampoco los diversos pensamientos que flotan en la mente.
Una vez contemplas la propia mente,
cesa la discriminación.

En el espacio se forman figuras y colores,
pero ni el negro ni el blanco tiñen el espacio.
Todo emerge de la propia mente;
la mente no es manchada ni por virtudes ni por vicios.

La oscuridad de siglos no puede ocultar el brillante sol,
ni tampoco los largos kalpas del samsara
pueden ocultar la esplendorosa luz de la mente.

Aunque se utilizan palabras para explicar el Vacío,
el Vacío como tal no puede ser nunca expresado.
Aunque decimos: `La mente es tan brillante como la luz´,
ésta trasciende palabras y símbolos.
Aunque la mente es en esencia vacío,
contiene y abarca todas las cosas.

No hagas nada con el cuerpo; sólo relájalo..
Cierra la boca firmemente y guarda silencio.
Vacía tu mente y céntrate en el vacío.
Como un bambú hueco relaja tu cuerpo.
Sin dar ni tomar, pon tu mente a descansar.
Mahamudra es como una mente que a nada se apega.
Practicando así, a su tiempo alcanzarás el estado de Buda.

Ni la práctica de mantras ni el paramita,
ni la instrucción en sutras y preceptos,
ni las enseñanzas de escuelas y escrituras,
proporcionan la realización de la Verdad innata.
Si la mente llena de deseo busca una meta,
solamente logra ocultar la Luz.

Aquél que observa los preceptos tántricos
y sin embargo hace discriminaciones,
traiciona el espíritu del samaya.
Cesa toda actividad,
abandona todo deseo,
deja que los pensamientos surjan y desaparezcan
como las olas del océano.
Aquél que nunca contradice el no-morar-en-nada,
ni el principio de la no-distinción,
cumple los preceptos tántricos.
Aquél que abandona sus deseos
y no se aferra ni a esto ni a aquello,
percibe el verdadero significado que expresan las escrituras.

En Mahamudra todos los pecados son incinerados;
en Mahamudra uno es liberado en la prisión del mundo.
Ésta es la suprema antorcha del Dharma.
Los que no creen en ella, son tontos que para siempre se revuelcan en el sufrimiento y la miseria.

Para luchar por la liberación
uno debe depender de un Gurú.
Cuando tu mente reciba sus bendiciones,
la emancipación estará a tu alcance.

De este modo, todas las cosas de este mundo
resultan insignificantes;
no son más que semillas de dolor.
Las pequeñas enseñanzas te llevan a actuar;
uno debe seguir sólo las grandes enseñanzas.

Trascender la dualidad es la visión del rey.
Conquistar las distracciones es la práctica de los reyes.
El camino de la no-práctica es el camino de todos los Budas.
Aquél que recorre ese camino alcanza el estado del Buda.

Este mundo es transitorio,
como los fantasmas y los sueños, sin substancia alguna.
Renuncia a él y abandona a tus parientes,
corta los cordones de la lujuria y del odio
y medita en los bosques y montañas.

Si dejas de luchar y permaneces relajado y natural,
pronto obtendrás el Mahamudra
y alcanzarás lo inalcanzable.

Corta la raíz de un árbol y sus hojas se secarán;
corta la raíz de tu mente y el samsara se desvanecerá.
La luz de una lámpara dispersa instantáneamente
la oscuridad de largos kalpas;
la intensa luz de la Mente quemará, como un rayo,
el velo de la ignorancia.

Quien se aferra a la mente
no ve la verdad de lo que está más allá de la mente.
Quien se esfuerza en practicar el dharma
no encuentra la verdad que está más allá de la práctica.
Para conocer lo que está más allá de ambas, mente y práctica,
uno debe cortar de raíz la mente
y observarlo todo en total desnudez.
De esta forma, uno deja de lado toda distinción
y permanece tranquilo.

Uno no debe dar ni tomar, sino permanecer natural,
porque Mahamudra está más allá
de toda aceptación o rechazo.
Puesto que alaya es no-nacido,
nadie puede obstruirlo, ni mancillarlo.
Al permanecer en el reino de lo no-nacido
toda apariencia se disolverá en el Dharmata,
y la voluntad y el orgullo se desvanecerán en la nada.

La comprensión suprema
trasciende «esto» y «eso».
La acción suprema
maneja todas las situaciones, sin apego.
La realización suprema
es tomar consciencia de lo inmanente, sin esperanza.

Al principio, el yogui siente que su mente
se precipita como una cascada;
a mitad de su curso fluye lenta y plácida,
como el Ganges;
al final es como un grandioso y vasto océano
donde las luces del hijo y de la madre se funden en una sola.

Distinguiendo los fenómenos y el Ser puro:

Los fenómenos son samsara, proyecciones confusas.
El Ser puro es nirvana una vez superado todo el dolor.
Estos dos no son uno y lo mismo, ni diferentes;
Uno es como el hielo y el otro como su agua.

Si atraviesas los fenómenos, las proyecciones confusas del samsara,
el Ser puro se manifiesta. Esto es transformación.
Entonces la apariencia desnuda brilla
Como los reflejos sobre las aguas de un océano de hielo derretido.

To question is unbelievably powerful. But if you question all the time and you remain in doubt, going first this way and then that, conviction is absent. If you develop a line of inquiry and learn from your experience, conviction grows. Then you put that conviction into practice but remain open to new information and experience. You set a steady course and remain willing to grow and learn. That is powerful.
